2016 OLYMPICS BID 
Chicago was eliminated in the first ballot of voting for the 2016 Olympics today in Copenhagen, a stunning defeat for the city that was expected to be one of the two finalists. 

Not even the presence of President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama — nor a long list of celebrities — was enough to help the United States' third-largest city.

Chicago had seemed to pick up momentum in the last few days, with many International Olympic Committee members seemingly charmed by Mrs. Obama. But when IOC president Jacques Rogge announced the results of the first vote, Chicago's name was announced.

Thousands of people stood in stunned silence in downtown Chicago after watching the International Olympic Committee choose someone else for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

The vote in Copenhagen was carried on huge television screens in the Daley Center, set up to carry what many had hoped would be approval of Chicago to host the games.

Instead, Chicago was bounced in the first round of voting Friday, bringing an audible gasp heard from the crowd.

The city was eliminated so quickly that some of the would-be revelers weren't sure what had happened. Some started asking if they had heard what they thought they heard.

“I've never really had a disappointment like this,” said Ken Rudd, a 33-year-old salesman from Evergreen Park. “This is one of the saddest things I've ever seen.”

Many stood for a few minutes, staring at the screen, and at least one flung his hands into the air in a crude gesture toward the TV screen.

Nigeria offers a wide variety of tourist attractions such as extended and roomy river and ocean beaches ideal for swimming and other water sports, unique wildlife, vast tracts of unspoiled nature ranging from tropical forest, magnificent waterfalls, some new rapidly growing cities and climatic conditions in some parts particularly conducive to holidaying. Other attractions include traditional ways of life preserved in local customs; rich and varied handicrafts and other colourful products depicting or illustrative of native arts and lifestyle, and the authentic unsophisticated but friendly attitude of many in the Nigerian population.

However, many of these attractions are still largely untapped and even at their raw states, they are still being enjoyed by few outsiders, either very rich visitors in quest of exoticism or adventurous people in search of new challenges and experiences.

For a country that's experienced a lot of economic nose dives and poverty due to the previous government's mismanagement, the opportunities for rejuvenation are many. Crime is decreasing, entrepreneurs are sprouting daily and confidence is rising in the country's ability to recover from the many woes of the past. Nigeria is a country with multi-cultures and languages, but the lingua franca is English, with a lot of people also speaking pigeon or broken English. Churches/Mosques Despite the religious clashes that have occurred mainly in the Northern parts of Nigeria ever since the Sharia law was introduced, churches and mosques coexist in the country where freedom and coexistence of differing religions has always been the practice. Right from the airport you'll see both a church and a mosque. Nigerians in the aftermath of the demoralizing reigns of their previous presidents have come to draw closer to a living God as those who once believed in and worshipped idols are increasingly serving a living God. Nigeria has also been seeing an influx of foreign preachers coming to evangelize and draw people to Christ. A large growth of Pentecostal churches and resurgance of Orthodox churches is quite evident. Sports Nigerians are avid soccer and athletic fans. They've produced seasoned soccer players, male and female, both domestically and internationally, which include Segun Odegbami, Emmanuel Okala, John Fasanu, Kanu Nwankwo, Jeje Okocha, Rashidi Yekini, Julius Aghaghowa, Ifeanyin Chiejine; and the Super Eagles teams usually proceed to the World Cup and Olympic levels of sports. The track teams (which produced atheletes like Modupe Oshikoya, Falilat Ogunkoya, Mary Onyali, Chioma Ajunwa, Emedulu and the Ejinwa twins); and the boxers which include Hogan Bassey, Michael Bamidele, Dick Tiger, Henry Akinwande are usually the envy of other African nations as they usually make it to the Olympic finals. Hakeem Olajuwon also made Nigeria proud with his basketball talent. The National Stadium in Surulere is the main sports arena in Lagos State. Embassies Most Countries have either a consular office or deputy High Commission in the diplomatic quarter of Victoria Island as the Embassies and High Commissions have mostly moved the Abuja, the new Federal Capital. Hobbies Horseback riding, Boating, Snooker/Billiards/Pool, Movies, Live Theatre, Swimming, Dancing, Traveling, Fishing, Soccer, Board games, etc. Real Estate With huge growth and expansion, both land and housing are being made available to both indigenes and qualifying foreigners all over Nigeria. The beach areas of Lekki and Alpha are rapidly developing as foreign investments are booming and more indigenes are beginning to relocate back home. For a fraction of what it would cost to hold lifetime mortgages in the U.S. or Europe, people can easily buy and probably build their own houses. Entrepreneurship Entrepreneurs are rising daily and a lot more privatization and domestic manufacturing of once imported goods including furniture, clothing and food are now evident. "Harlequin Interiors" in Ilupeju and "Magnificent Furniture" in Ikoyi are some examples. CAPE TOWN, South Africa — A plump fur seal pup sat on the pier near the water taxi stop. Walking by in a flowery African head scarf, a woman ate kabobs skewered on a broken coat hanger. At an outdoor bar, a blond woman in an orchid prom dress poured sparkling wine into tulip-shaped glasses. Two policemen trotted by on beautifully groomed horses. Five blue-black men so tall and lean they appeared to be on stilts hovered over a dreadlocked busker playing a didgeridoo.
